In America, we got TV's "Space Battleship Yamato" as "Star Blazers" in 1979. In the same era as "Battle Of The Planets", the cartoon was syndicated and mildly appealing to me.
When I saw the trailer for the live action version of the film in 2010, I was very excited.
That was a mistake as, apart from a few sequences, the live action film Space Battleship Yamato (2010) is a rather tedious affair.
Like a Star Wars prequel, the film lacks much to engage with. And, apart from a few moments early on, it even fails to deliver many visual delights.
There's a sequence where the hero rescues Yuki Mori (Meisa Kuroki), and that was exciting. But most of the film is a bit tedious for someone like me with just a passing familiarity with the story and characters.
Still, the Hong Kong DVD edition of the film looks nice, has English subtitles, and is available at a very reasonable price.
