Following on from his superb EP last summer, Fred Abong is back with yet another one. Pulsing is out on Friday and it is an expansion on the sort of heavy folk one found on that earlier effort, along with more elaborate layers of production.
The former member of both Belly and Throwing Muses here offers up the kind of introspective alt-rock that should feel a bit familiar to fans of those two bands, even if "Meet Me" here is a bit starker than one might expect. The title cut on Pulsing is evocative, the sort of thing that one might expect to find on a Iron & Wine release, or something from Red House Painters. Elsewhere, the production on "Firefly" imbues the song with eerie menace, while the rough "Wire" rides an awesome riff into the sun, a hint of harder material lurking in Fred Abong's songbook.
Fred Abong will be going out on tour with Kristin Hersh where he will likely have copies of this fine EP for sale on physical formats. For now, you can order it via the link below. Pulsing is out on Friday.
