Let It Rain: A Brief Review Of The New Album From Lee Scratch Perry On On-U Sound

Lee "Scratch" Perry is back. The legendary producer and musician is here with his newest album, Rainford. The release, out this Friday via On-U Sound Records, is yet another in Perry's long-line of space-y dub classics, produced by the equally-legendary Adrian Sherwood.

"Run Evil Spirit" rides forward on a reliable sort of reggae skank-rhythm, while "Let It Rain" is more expansive, a slight hook percolating under Lee "Scratch" Perry's spoken word delivery on this one. "Makumba Rock" is propulsive and invigorating, while "African Starship" is even better still, a near-jazzy number that sees an understated melody anchored by Perry's equally-understated, downright mellow vocals. The cut is, like closer "Children of the Night", a nice blend of Perry's unique delivery style and Sherwood's inimitable touch as a producer, one that on Rainford favors a subtler production methodology in order to suit the older Perry and his vocal style in 2019. Lots of Rainford is just as good, with the mix of Lee "Scratch" Perry and Adrian Sherwood the sort of pairing that is still capable of producing magic even in the 21st century.

Rainford is out on Friday via On-U Sound Records.
