Strange Locomotion: A Brief Review Of The New Album From Wreckless Eric

For a guy pegged as a one-hit wonder from the New Wave days, Wreckless Eric has had a helluva career since then. And, here in 2019, the one-time Stiff Records legend is set to drop his latest, and very fine, album. Transcience is out today on Eric's own Southern Domestic label and it's a rollicking beast of a record.

While "Father to the Man" is lyrical tunefulness, the rougher "Strange Locomotion" is even better, flashes of those rust-bucket early Kinks numbers coming to mind here. Elsewhere, "Dead End" is tight and concise, even as "The Half of It" is a bit too long and indulgent. Still, there's lots to love here on Transcience, especially the peppy "Creepy People (In The Middle of the Night)", and the light "Tiny House", all Band-vibes writ large. Transcience is a relatively short record but it's one that is, largely, successful. Wreckless Eric, while a sharp lyricist, is an equally adept musician, one skilled at mingling folk-rock flashes with bursts of post-punk energy.

Transcience is out today. More details on Wreckless Eric are available via his official website.
