Great Concerns: A Brief Review Of The New Album From Lust For Youth

The new record from Lust For Youth is out tomorrow on the famed Sacred Bones Records label. The album, called simply Lust For Youth, is full of bright, shimmering electro-pop. It is one of the best things I've heard on the label in months at least, and a really pleasant surprise for this reviewer.

Opener "New Balance Point" is clearly inspired by O.M.D., while the catchy "Venus De Milo" and "Insignificant" reveal that Lust For Youth owe a debt or two to mid-Eighties Depeche Mode. Elsewhere, "Great Concerns" seems a homage to many earlier pioneers of New Wave, while "Adrift" is like a Marc Almond cut updated for a new century. At their very best here on Lust For Youth, Lust For Youth manage to make this kind of material seem fresh again, the surfaces of every cut here sleek and supple. Largely catchy and tuneful, the offerings here are perhaps poppier than lots of what's usually released by this label, and that should be a draw for newer followers of this group.
