I'm Taking It With Me: A Brief Review Of The Latest EP From The Scientists

The Scientists are legends. They are also a band with a lot of ferocious power. Following recent tours, including with faves of mine Des Demonas, the Australian group dropped an EP not too long that serves as a neat, limited-edition introduction to their evil charms. Called 9H2O.SiO2, the release, out now via In The Red, is bristling garage rock of the very best sort. It's hard to believe how long Kim Salmon has been doing this, but he's still got it.

Opener "Hey Sydney" is a throwback bit of pseudo-funk, while "Self Doubt" is even grungier in the best sense of the word. The cut is, like lots here on 9H2O.SiO2 and in the band's rich back-catalog, full of bad intent. Elsewhere, "What's This Game?" roars and stomps in a manner that echoes countrymen The Birthday Party from so long ago, while "I'm Taking It With Me" is snappy and shouty, Salmon sounding like a carnival-barker here. 9H2O.SiO2 crackles along, offering five slices of proof, like the final "100 Points of ID", at just how virulent and wicked the hooks are at the disposal of Kim Salmon and crew. This is all sinister and tuneful. I loved it!

9H2O.SiO2 is out now via In The Red Records.
