Nomads In The Night: A Quick Review Of The New Album From Julio Nickels

Julio Nickels is Jason Orlovich. The singer, whatever you call him, has a rich voice, one which recalls those of artists as disparate as David Sylvian and Jens Lekman. The musician's new album, Feeling Fickle, is out now. It succeeds largely thanks to Jason's voice, even as the tunes stake out a fairly morose side of the indie-pop sonic spectrum.

"Nomads in the Night" is stately and precise, while "They Found Me Here" faintly suggests something like slower tunes from that album from The Postal Service. Nickels rarely varies the sort of hooks that are here so, indeed, lots of this feels fairly one-dimensional. Still, "League of Nations" is sort of warm, and "Build Me A Mystery" is interesting mainly due to the electronic effects layerd onto the track. At his best here, Julio Nickels' tunes vaguely remind one of certain late-period Blue Nile numbers, or David Sylvian stuff without the ornate levels of production.
