It's been two years since Permo was released, but Spinning Coin are back. The Scottish band have decided to drop a new single. Called "Visions at the Stars" / "Not a Dream", the single is out today via Domino, and it's every bit as affecting as the band's album, belatedly reviewed by me here recently.
The A-side here, "Visions at the Stars", has a jaunty hook, one that feels equally in debt to Pavement and The Pastels, while the nearly-wordless chorus carries this thing forward with a confident swagger. Ramshackle and heartfelt, the number is one of the best things that Spinning Coin have released to date, and the sort of track that will be a perfect entry-point for new fans. The B-side of this new 2019 single is "Not a Dream", a composition that seems remarkably like something from The Verlaines circa Bird Dog. The sort of thing that's got a kind of lopsided charm about it, the tune is simple and a thing of immediate joy. I can't wait to hear what the next Spinning Coin album will sound like.
