Beehive is Jake Sprecher (ex-Terry Malts, Smokescreens, and Business of Dreams) and Bud Amenti (of Shutups). The two make music that is all kinds of wrong The duo's newest album is called Depressed + Distressed, and the abrasive mess is out on Friday. Those looking for something like the Slumberland Records stuff that Jake usually plays on are in for a rude awakening.
"Get Off My Back" is like The Jesus Lizard doing a Cabaret Voltaire song, while "You're So Fascinating" is even rougher, drum machine beats anchoring anger and noise. I sound like I'm being dismissive but I love stuff like what's on Depressed + Distressed sometimes. Elsewhere, "'90s Trash" is hysterical, the perfect counterpoint to "Losing My Edge", if you know what I mean, while "When Can I See You Again" reveals a debt owed to Void, despite this tune having a good deal more of a melody than some of the stuff from those harDCore pioneers. The buzzing "Wasting Our Time" ends this brief release with a real What the fuck?-kind of attitude, such that Beehive seem to be ones to watch as they teeter close to the edge of the abyss in wonderful fashion.
