Catching Up With This New EP From Therese Lithner

Therese Lithner's voice is a thing with real power. Her style recalls artists like Weyes Blood and Julie Cruise, but what's here on her latest EP, Prints, is a good deal starker than the material from those musicians. The EP, out now via Lazy Octopus, is alternately bleak and beautiful.

While the title cut is moody and heavy, "Our Summer" is slightly lighter. The tune here does this subtle thing where it almost breaks free of itself, and that tension makes this one affecting. Therese Lithner's voice is a modulated wonder, well-suited to the somewhat morose stuff here, but equally adept at anchoring a spry number like "Midnight", this EP's closer. The cut, with its New Order-ish bass-line, is the best thing here, and a suggestion of another direction Therese Lithner can pursue in the future.
