For Yesterday: A Brief Review Of The New Album From NovaBound

The music of NovaBound owes huge debts to stuff from the Seventies and Nineties, but the compositions of Andrew Agulto are distinctive ones. The band's newest album, Sevenths, is out on Friday, and it's full of wildly tuneful material.

"For Yesterday" sounds a bit like compositions from Jeff Lynne and Lindsey Buckingham, while the peppier "Under the Sun" churns in a more obviously power-pop style. Andrew Agulto, his brother Arthur, and Kevin Basko make this material easy to enjoy, even the numbers that run on a bit longer than they should. "Shattered Eyes" and "Favorite Color" meander a bit, but they each have strong hooks that recall material from ELO, or the glory days of AM pop. The closer, "Another Time", is the real standout here. The cut, full of plaintive chords that bring to mind compositions from Nilsson, charms immensely, especially the cooing coda and gnarly guitar solo.
