The new EP from Finnish musician Jaakko Eino Kalevi is out on Friday via Domino. The release veers between electronica and material that owes a lot to both dance music and movie soundtracks. The EP is also full of tunes that are as light as air in spots.
The title cut here on Dissolution throbs like an old New Wave number from the Eighties, while "I Am Looking Forward" is insistent, an electroclash vibe buzzing under this one. Elsewhere, "The Search" makes me want to get out a breakdancing mat, while "The Source of Absolute Knowledge" recalls Tom Tom Club. Jaakko Eino Kalevi blends past forms with a modern sense of how genre-labels can be obliterated, or ignored. In that sense, his music invigorates with a sense of possibility.
