Charade: A Brief Review Of The New Album From Las Kellies

The Argentinian duo Las Kellies make tunes that bounce and pop with energy. Their sound is unlike lots else you're going to be offered in indie quarters, and that's a good thing. The newest album, Suck This Tangerine dropped yesterday on Fire Records, and it is the sort of record that can remind you of how much fun music can be. And who wouldn't want to be reminded of that these days?

"Funny Money" suggests an updating of The Slits template, as does "He's Who's", while "Baby" is more interested in working up a bass-heavy groove. Elsewhere, "Rid of You" sounds nearly like the Gang of Four given the amount of rough guitar-scratches here. At their very best, these players -- Cecilia Kelly and Silvina Costa -- manage to take the simplest of concepts and work them up into marvelous little engines of rhythmic pop and swing. Fans of this duo should appreciate how much Suck This Tangerine ramps up the vibe of their earlier work, such that the power of these grooves is infectious and undeniably strong.

Suck This Tangerine is out now via Fire Records.
