Tribal Fusion: Heads Up About New Single From Cardiff's Surreal Kinnock

On the periphery of normal, the new Welsh band Surreal Kinnock have been setting up camp. Releasing a string of singles which are going to make up a debut EP, the Cardiff act are cranking out jams that recall the raucous pre-Britpop kind of post-punk that lots of us have missed. The newest cut is called "Tribal Fusion" and it dropped yesterday on Strangetown Records.

Produced by Super Furry Animals drummer Dafydd Ieuan, "Tribal Fusion" is calamitous. It rattles with the kind of rhythmic thrust that old Fall singles had in the late Eighties, and seems vaguely an heir to the better offerings from The World of Twist, if you remember them. There's an absurdist streak here to these Surreal Kinnock signles, and props go to brothers Gruffydd John and Meredydd Russell-Jones, along with the rhythm section of Andrew Hughes (drums) and Dano Lew (bass). This latest offering, maybe more than the earlier ones, felt like it might go off the rails at any moment, and this old Earl Brutus fan loved hearing indie-rock with that whiff of chaos about it again.

"Tribal Fusion" is out now via Strangetown Records.
