So I Can See: A Brief Review Of The New Album From Anna Burch

The new album from Anna Burch, If You're Dreaming, is something that's fairly modest in sound. However, it's loaded with material that's full of charm, heart, and a robust tunefulness. Produced by Sam Evian, the new Polyvinyl Records offering is hard to disparage and easy to enjoy.

"Can't Sleep" is gently infectious, while the more interesting "Party's Over" sees Anna's beautiful voice married to the sort of backing that wouldn't have sounded entirely out of place on an old Ivy single. Elsewhere, "So I Can See" has a fantastic hook that almost places this within arm's reach of Margo Guryan material, while "Tell Me What's True" sounds like something from the heyday of Seventies folk-rock.

The entirety of If You're Dreaming has a rather uniform sound, and the variances in the approach here by this singer are subtle ones which are revealed on subsequent listens. Still, given that, stuff like "Here with You" is genuinely lovely, and unassuming about it too. That makes this one a record easy to enjoy.

If You're Dreaming is out now via Polyvinyl Records.
