The Sydney band Bloods is centered around Marihuzka Cornelius AKA MC. She's the brains behind this, and the one who's singing, writing, and playing guitar on this ferocious stuff. The band's newest EP, Seattle, is out now via Share It, and it's full of loud riffs, crunchy hooks, and the right kind of attitude for rock-and-roll in 2020.
"Girls Are Just Fucking Cool Like That" roars in a way we've not heard since maybe that second Veruca Salt album, while "I Hate It" is similarly punchy. The EP was recorded at Jack Endino's Sound House and produced by Steve Fisk, so there are practical reasons for this EP to be called Seattle. Still, that title shouldn't imply that this is grunge because this material is far more euphoric than some of what that genre offered up. MC even manages to take "Some Girls are Bigger Than Others" by The Smiths and reclaim it as her own. Given Morrissey's more recent bouts of offensiveness, the reclaiming of his song by MC seems even more a radical act. And, needless to say, this version rocks.
This whole EP is a lot of fun, and it's the sort of music that's meant to be played loud. There's a lot of throwback charm to this stuff, and fans of the louder end of the alt-rock spectrum will find some riff here to embrace. The perfect thing to crank in the car during the summer, Seattle makes me want to hear even more from Bloods as soon as possible.
