The new EP from Tomemitsu is mellow enough to be pegged as ambient (almost), and as straightforward and catchy (in spots) to be labelled synth-pop. Whatever label you want to throw on this should work, and I'll Be Alright, out today, is one of this week's most enjoyable, if brief, releases.
The title cut is languid and expertly composed, hints here of stuff like Dave Depper and Gardens & Villas, maybe, while "Strange Vibes" is altogether peppier and fun. This one recalls Ablebody and Papercuts for me but don't you dare call this dream pop! Martin Tomemitsu is making something here that works in a fairly obvious way, even with the indie trappings around the project. "Secrets" is a great number too, and it made me think of Dolphin Brothers, that spin-off project of Steven Jansen and Richard Barbieri from Japan and Rain Tree Crow. Tomemitsu's brand of pop is one which is lush but simple, elegant but fairly accessible. I dig this!
