Wasted Time: A Quick Review Of The New Pink Mexico Album

I've heard a few Pink Mexico releases but this is the first one I felt compelled to review. Idiot Piss Illiterate, out on Friday via Broken Clover Records, is stupid and primitive, and devoid of any nuance of depth. That said, I loved it! It's not the kind of thing that I'd listen to everyday, or the sort of record that makes me feel like life is going my way, but, dammit, it rocks! I mean, it's a beast!

"Wasted Time" is early Nirvana before they got cleaned up for MTV, while "Keep It Together" is a bunch of brutal riffs cobbled together in the most rudimentary way possible. But, you know what? This one has a killer chorus, one which makes this -- don't tell the players here! -- downright catchy! Elsewhere, "Not Feeling Ok" is feedback and noise, washing over a hook or too, while "Bellevue Psych Ward" recalls early Mudhoney.

If some of this is reminiscent of lots of bands from the early heyday of Sub Pop Records, Pink Mexico at least make you love this kind of stuff again. All of Idiot Piss Illiterate makes one remember the days when American alt-rock could sound this dangerous, this unruly, and this unsavory. There's nothing really smart here, but there's lots that's smartly dumb. Volume adds to the appeal, of course. If you want to crank something up and tune out the world, this Pink Mexico record is the perfect thing to reach for.
