Turn Your Back Around: A Quick Review Of The New Album From Liela Moss

The new record from Liela Moss, Who The Power, out on Friday via Bella Union, is a bold, ambitious release. Centered around the singer's strong vocals, the album is full of accessible but risky material. The textures here might seem familiar but the delivery is what pushes this into the stratosphere.

Opener "Turn Your Back Around" is all Eighties synth-rock revved up un-ironically, while "Watching the Wolf", is more elegant. "Always Sliding" and "Atoms at Me" might earn some comparisons to Florence and the Machine, but Liela Moss remains a fairly distinctive vocalist. On "White Feather", Moss finally surrenders herself to a really catchy hook in order to offer up a truly fantastic track. While most of Who The Power is concerned with making a big impact and grabbing a listener through the power of the vocals, this cut suggests that Moss can soothe when she wants to.
