You Did Right: A Brief Review Of The New EP From HALAN

HALAN is a singer from Los Angeles. Her brand of dark pop bridges the mainstream and the alternative worlds. The latest EP, Best of Intentions, out now, is fairly stark, but there's enough here to recommend this release.

The title cut is bracing, nearly catchy even, while "You Did Right" is even better, with a mournful progression in the melody that's memorable. Still, "I Don't Know You" is the best thing here on this four-track EP. This cut at least sounds radio-friendly, with the electro-pop and purely pop pieces fitting together nicely here.

HALAN has some power in her voice, and she certainly commands this material, but the hooks throughout this quartet of tunes are not nearly as sharp as one would like. Still, in terms of mood, at least, a lot is accomplished here and sometimes a mood is enough.

Best of Intentions is out now.
