It seems like only yesterday that I was looking for this band's material in cool record stores like Vinyl Ink (cooler by far than the record stores I worked in). It's funny how much time has passed but amazing how fresh this all still sounds. Even though Amelia Fletcher and Rob Pursey have gone on to other projects (Marine Research, The Catenary Wires, The Drift, European Sun, Swansea Sound, etc.), it's never not worth the time to look back at Heavenly and the output of the band. Thankfully next week sees the release of A Bout De Heavenly, a brand new compilation of the group's best tracks, out on Damaged Goods in the U.K. and via MVD here.
In honor of that occasion, the band have offered up the long-lost video to 1993 stand-alone Sarah Records single "P.U.N.K. Girl", one of their best tunes. Put together from footage shot by Pat Maley at the Capitol Theater, Olympia, WA, around 1994. At the time, Heavenly were Amelia Fletcher, Mathew Fletcher, Peter Momtchiloff, Cathy Rogers, and Rob Pursey. The Heavenly "imposters" in this video are "Rob" (Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening and K Records); "Matthew" (Heather Dunn of Tiger Trap and Dub Narcotic Sound System); "Amelia" (Julie Butterfield); "Pete" (Adam Shea); and "Cathy" (Maia Vanyo). The stills are from Lois (Lois Maffeo).
While you enjoy the video, and recall a golden era for DIY indie, pre-order A Bout De Heavenly using one of these two links: Damaged Goods in the U.K. or MVD here. Then check back here in the next week for a review of the compilation.
