Whispers: A Brief Review Of The New EP From Organi

Organi is Mike Walti from Oakland. The record is Parlez-vous Français?, and the sound is throwback synth-funk. Everything about this makes the project seem like some lost gem discovered in a record bin somewhere, but, no, this is a new project, and one which revels in the kind of old-fashioned dance-influenced synth-pop that we all grew up on.

A woozy run at Philamore Lincoln's "The North Wind Blew South" is the center-piece here, a psych gem that owes as much in this iteration to Stereolab as it does to the original artist. Elsewhere, "Whispers" is breathy ye-ye stuff, while "4 Dolla Jeans" is like Anita Lane with an edge. "The Getaway" recalls Broadcast, while a cover of The Vaselines' "Slushy" is Mazzy Star mixed with Goldfrapp. These numbers are all elegantly retro, with the assorted players here coalescing around Walti's vision of what dreamy pop once was, and what it can remain.

Parlez-vous Français? is out now via Alien Transistor.
