The new self-titled album from Mihi Nihil is fairly energetic. The band offer up dark post-punk of the sort that owes a debt to Siouxsie, as well as her American compatriots in our punk tradition. The whole thing is given extra heft thanks to the production by Adam Lasus (Helium, Lilys, Madder Rose, Versus), and that's another factor that gives Mihi Nihil a sound that recalls the better alt-rockers of the Nineties.
"Vertigo" works up a nice head of steam, with "I Eat You" showcasing singer Mollie Weaver's vocals. Her near-operatic technique shines on lots of what's on Mihi Nihil, and it's the distinctive thing that anchors so much of this. The other players use the slower tracks like "Falling Star" to give this all a textural charm, with the music recalling so many things I liked in the Clinton years. But, to be honest, Mihi Nihil's approach works best for me on the faster songs, because it's on those that Mihi Nihil recall a band like Belly. That said, Mihil Nihil are a bit heavier, with a psuedo-goth edge that gives this just the right hint of danger.
Mihi Nihil is out on Friday. More details via the band's official website, or the official Facebook page.
