Lucy Gooch hails from Bristol and her music delivers an interesting mix of emotion and austerity. The newest EP from the artist, Rain's Break, is out now via Fire Records. The release recalls artists as diverse as Bjork, Enya, June Tabor, and Slowdive.
Gooch, favoring mood more than conventional song structure, uses numbers like "Rain's Break" and "Ash and Orange" to explore texture and vibe. The cuts progress outward, with the keyboard figures and instrumental bits getting more complex as the pieces go forward. Elsewhere, "It Brings Me Back to You" is elegant, part O.M.D. and Fad Gadget even. Lucy doesn't experiment too much in an abrasive sense, but she does in terms of allowing a tone or mood to convey what words would for other performers. "6AM" is even better, using washes of sound to push a listener into a blissful, though complicated place. That it sounds like a soundtrack to an imagined film is even more of a compliment.
