Brimming with the kind of zest indie is usually lacking, the new album from the oddly-named Spud Cannon is a thing of joy this week. Good Kids Make Bad Apples, out today via Good Eye records, is a record that sort of surprised me as I usually hate stuff like this. But I can't fight it as Spud Cannon actually have the hooks to make this work.
Some of this suggests a more direct iteration of Spinning Coin from across the ocean, but "Supersonic" and "Juno" are shamelessly catchy. If this is what indie is in 2021, it's hardly an underground proposition given how immediate this all is. That said, the trappings around the quirky workouts are all those of the DIY set. "You Got It All (NOT)" is boisterous, while "Lovely" takes things down a notch while cribbing a hook from Biz Markie. Spud Cannon are clever, but the melodies are sharp here, and the tunes have a way of ingratiating themselves with a listener. The band's name might seem silly, but at least Spud Cannon are serious about making Wannadies-recalling jams like "Easy" and filling up an album with them.
