Let The Seasons Work: A Review Of The New Album From The Go! Team

By Donzig

I have rarely fallen in love with a new song so much and so quickly as the first time I ever heard The Go! Team. On a 2015 trip to Seattle while listening on a Sunday morning to KEXP on the rental car radio, I was instantly infatuated with "Did You Know" and simply had to have it on vinyl. I was able to find it the next day on their latest album, The Scene Between, in a Portland record store. Finally hearing the entire album a week later at home on my turntable, it was well worth the wait. The song, indeed the whole album, still moves me to this day.

I now have the privilege of hearing The Go! Team's latest release in advance and review it here. Get Up Sequences Part 1, is the band's second album in six years since The Scene Between, and sixth overall. While each of the former albums has its own style, whether it be hip hop, dance, or indie pop, Get Up Sequences Part 1 features all of these, with the diverse songs being held together by a consistent rhythm section and danceable groove.

Opening strongly with infectious, beat-driven indie pop in "Let the Seasons Work", the record kicks off, continues with the rap-flavored "Cookie", and closes even more strongly with the ska instrumental "Tame the Great Plains" and another great indie tune with a heavy beat, "World Remember Me Now". In between there is a good deal of fun to be had. The album gets better as it goes along, and bears repeated listening without getting stale. I would rank the latest Go! Team release as their second best album after The Scene Between.

Get Up Sequences Part 1 is due out July 2 on Memphis Industries.
