Hybrid Feelings: A Quick Review Of The New Album From Meatbodies

Chad Ubovich knows of the fuzz rock. When he's not in Fuzz, he's in Meatbodies, a trio that many of us have missed in the last few years. The group's dropped their newest record this week, and 333, out now via In The Red Records, is a bit of a scorcher.

"Reach for the Sun" opens this record in fine fashion, a mess of riffs slamming into each out with the right kind of detached vocals over top, while "Let Go" is more interesting. This one recalls Ty Segall and that sort of makes sense, given the connections between Fuzz and Ty, etc., but it's better when Meatbodies make music that's fairly distinctive. "Hybrid Feelings", a highlight here, is lighter, with the vocals and guitars layered over a faintly Britpop-like vibe. It's a nice juxtaposition of forms, and an indication of the progress this group has made beyond their origins.
