Our House: A Quick Review Of The New EP From Pom Poko

Norway's Pom Poko make music that straddles a few branches of the indie tree. Brash, playful, and precise, the tunes of this outfit are always energetic and clever. That remains true of the four cuts on the group's new EP, out on Bella Union today.

This is Our House opens with "Enduro Corner", a spry number that leaps around a bit, while the charging "Time" is even better still. The guitars crunch here, with the rhythms keeping up underneath the chords. It's something vaguely post-rock. Elsewhere, "Our House" floats around and then crashes in bursts of fitful energy. It's jazz-y, in a way, and a kind of art rock in another, but it's also wildly playful. The closer here, "Sonatina" is darn lovely, and more subdued by far than lots of the other material.
