All Dressed Up In Dreams: A Quick Review Of The New EP From Mo Dotti

It still blows my mind how bands whose members were not even born when Loveless dropped are able to conjure up the magic of that record, and era, so easily. L.A. act Mo Dotti remind a listener than just when you think there's no more fire left in shoegaze, there's more than enough to generate some awesome music. The group's new EP, Guided Imagery is out today and it's superb.

Opener "Loser Smile" is MBV-ish, so much so that Shields might sue. It's that good, that flawlessly perfect in its delivery of the feedback sugar-rush we all crave. Elsewhere, the title cut varies things a bit, while a lovely cover of The 6ths' "All Dressed Up in Dreams" charms immensely. This one modulates the sonic attack here enough that one almost dispenses the shoegaze label. "Come on Music" serves up the sort of woozy pleasures of mid-period Loop, while the jangle-pop of "Lights On in the Sun" has echoes of Lush about it, even as it suggest that Mo Dotti have enough tricks up their sleeves to do their own thing, while staying rooted in the very genre that so many of us love so much. Guided Imagery wins points by how well it tackles the sub-genres in and around the shoegaze one.
