Mind On Fire: A Quick Review Of The New EP From The Mary Onettes

This week we're treated to a new three-track EP from The Mary Onettes. The first thing they've released in four years, What I Feel In Some Places is a fairly successful, albeit short summation of the sound of this Swedish band in 2022.

The title number rides a smooth hook over Peter Gabriel "Red Rain" drum patterns. I didn't come up with that as I think the marketing copy mentioned it. That's a good description so I'm not ashamed to use it here. The vocals are like honey and help the cut go down as somehow more genuine than this kind of sleek music usually is. The middle selection, "Mind on Fire", is livelier, though. And, as site contributor Stan Cierlitsky and I discussed, it sure sounds like Tame Impala. That's not a dig as it's a pretty good thing to sound like, frankly. My personal favorite track on What I Feel in Some Places is the instrumental, "Palace", the closer here. Keyboard lines like solo Bill Nelson stuff in the Eighties, and a wash of sounds behind them like something from an even older Eno album make this brief offering a real gem.

For now, What I Feel in Some Places is a nice taster, a reminder of the talents of this band. But we really would love to have a full-length release from The Mary Onettes in 2022. Here's hoping that happens.
