The new single by Katie Alice Greer is unsettling enough on its own, but when coupled with the brand new video, it takes on another life entirely. An eerie voyeuristic journey, "Captivated" sees the former Priests singer haunted by someone, or possibly haunting someone herself in a technological wasteland of the present, or near-past. It's a bracing bit of work, as is the music itself.
For me, I can hear bits and pieces of The Normal and Fad Gadget here. The highest praise we could give KAG is that she sounds like the best things on Mute Records from a few decades ago. I think that's partly the vibe she might be going for here. The track, written and recorded and produced by Greer, is another taste of her upcoming album, Barbarism, which will be out in about two weeks. The cut is as strong on its own as it is with the creepy video, and whether heard or watched "Captivated" soothes and creeps into the mind.
Barbarism will be out on June 24. Details below.
