Ghost Woman, the project of Evan Uschenko, is one of the few acts lately to successfully conjure up a Seventies-sort of authenticity with something approaching authenticity. The era that inspired Ghost Woman, the self-titled record out today, has inspired others but done here, the rock works.
"Do You" recalls The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield, but with a modern sheen, which makes sense given Evan's studio work with so many other artists, while the spry "Behind Your Eyes" mines a vein of retro appeal similar to that mined by bands like Ultimate Painting. Elsewhere, closer "Come On" hits the sweet spot that the first Mazzy Star hit. Uschenko keeps things simple here, though he's ambitious enough to have attempted this in the first place. Thankfully, his studio skills are such that he makes this all sound fantastic and genuine.
