The music of S.C.A.B. conjures up memories of NYC bands from an earlier era. And while this NYC band seem to be working up a certain familiar mood, there's enough here on their self-titled album to warrant a recommendation from these parts. S.C.A.B. is out on Friday.
Opener "Why Do I Dream of You?" and "MTA LUX" throw Strokes-y and shoegaze elements together to see what happens. The results are modestly successful. Elsehwere, "Small Talk" felt to me like A.R. Kane or early Childhood stuff, all moody chord shifts and washes of sound. S.C.A.B. have songs which reference C86 and Spotify in their titles, and that seems to reek of a sort of desperation to be added to some playlist somewhere. Thankfully those are not even the better tunes here. "Beige and Green" might be my fave here as it's got a sort of woozy charm, while closer "Pink Tire" seems to have more energy than some of the other selections on this record.
A record of some pleasures, S.C.A.B. by S.C.A.B. will be out on Friday.
