Jagged Croon: A Quick Review Of The New Album From Euros Childs (Gorky's Zygotic Mynci)

Euros Childs of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci continues to make great music. Not only that, but he typically releases it via his website on a pay-what-you-want basis. His new one came out today. And Curries is playful and compelling, which is exactly what you'd expect from this guy, I think.

"Jagged Croon" is an early highlight here, all Frank Tovey-ish vocals over an undulating keyboard riff. Elsewhere, "Children of the Tomb" mines a similar vibe, with the minimalist approach conveying a sense of impending doom, or release, even as "Never Fading" is more intentionally lovely and calming.

Curries doesn't sound too much like Gorky's, apart from the familiar vocals, but that's probably a good thing. Euros Childs has pursued his own muse since those days, and it's guided him into some new and interesting directions. This record is one of simple pleasures, though that's not to indicate that the tunes are not carefully constructed and intricately arranged in their own DIY fashion. The producution by Stephen Black gives this whole undertaking a nice feel, one that's nearly in debt to electronica from earlier decades.

Curries is available via the official Euros Childs website.
