Following a single and a video, Marlody from Kent is ready to offer up her new album. I'm Not Sure at All, out this Friday on Skep Wax signals a departure from some of the styles found elsewhere on the label. However, the music here is just as affecting.
While "Summer" is starkly beautiful, the subtly spry "Runaway" brings to mind Sandy Denny and Judee Sill. This is lush music, even if Marlody scales back the production on some of these numbers. "These Doubts" benefits from a robust rhythmic setting, even as Marlody's sleek and clean vocals soar through the depths of the production. Elsewhere, "Malevolence" and "Wrong" find Marlody using percolating synths and tinkling samples to contrast with her clear-as-a-bell voice. The vocals seem one instrument of many, with the entire setting of these two tracks being elegant, yet understated. All of I'm Not Sure at All is similarly good, though closer "Otherly" takes things in interesting directions, suggesting that Marlody could compete with Clannad-era Enya given the treatments afforded her as a performer in this selection specifically.
