Make Good: A Brief Review Of The New Album From Warm Human

Warm Human is Meredith Johnston. What's here on Hometown Hero, the new Warm Human record, is more than the usual singer-songwriter stuff. There's a dark undercurrent to these numbers that captivates.

From the punchy, PJ Harvey-ish "Do It" and on to the lyrical "Make Good", the vocal performances here are powerful, even as they straddle a few genres. The robust backing on some tracks beefs up Warm Human's already forceful delivery, while on others, her voice is as soft and warm as honey. The compositions straddle a line between folk-rock and alt-rock, with the spare instrumentation giving this a vibe like early Low in spots, though the exemplary "Daddy Issues" roars in the manner of Veruca Salt.

Hometown Hero by Warm Human is out on Friday.
