The new record by Gate (Michael Morley of The Dead C) is a haunting, expansive affair. It's music that has mood and sweep, but which remains uniquely iconoclastic in its approach to noise and ambience. Last month, I reviewed it very favorably, and today I'm here to premiere a video from The Numbers.
"All of My Family" unfurls with menace, and a sort of sadness. The tune spirals around, with the melody sort of heard in fragments of feedback and vocals. Time seems to slow down, and the noisier bits here only punctuate the void that Morley opens up with this one. Michael Morley has placed a premium on nuance here, and the song retains a mystery that's hard to articulate for prospective listeners.
The Numbers by Gate (Michael Morley) is out now via Birdman Records. Details below.
