I know there's a good deal of buzz this week about that new single from The Umbrellas on Slumberland Records (as well there should be), but the new one from The Laughing Chimes is what made me perk up today. A Promise To Keep is new music from the Athens, Ohio lot and it's aces as could be guessed.
"A Promise to Keep" sounds like Bauhaus doing an Athens (Georgia) classic, all Peter Murphy-ish vocals and Peter Buck-y guitar lines. It's a neat blend of the trio's earlier offering with a harder, darker-edged kind of material. The flip is a cover of "Ballerina Out of Control", from college rock legends The Ocean Blue. This one, while jangle-y, is also just the right kind of moody. The Seurkamp brothers and new bassist Avery Bookman are pointing out a slightly new direction here for The Laughing Chimes and I positively cannot wait for more from this band.
