Review by Stan Cierlitsky
Newmoon continue their beautiful sonic assault with their new album Temporary Light which is out March 22. This is their third album and it's reallly good. Newmoon is considered a shoegaze band, and they hail from Antwerp, Belgium, but to me they offer more than the standard shoegazing fare.
We got our first taste of the new album last year with the teaser "Fading Phase". It starts slow with a superb pounding intro, and it eases into a lush beauty. It perfectly mixes gentleness with glorious, guitar-driven outbursts.
My favorite song on the album is the third taster called "Crazing". Again, it opens with a really cool drum sequence. The beats on this album definitely stand out alongside the dreamy landscape, which I guess makes sense since it turns out Newmoon picked up Conor Dawson as their new drummer. "Crazing" always feels like it's about to explode into something even bigger, but stays somewhat restrained.
The rest of the album's eight tracks are more of the same but in a good way. It's filled with blooming guitars, haunting melodies, and interesting beats. A lot of this record reminds me of early Slowdive recordings, which makes sense since Slowdive's Simon Scott mastered this album.
Temporary Light by Newmoon is out on Friday. Hopefully later this year they will make it to the States to play live.
