This debut from Shane Lavers as Chanel Beads has a vibe that's a blend of multiple genres. I sort of got sucked into this quickly, as it checked off a lot of boxes that work for me as a fan. I suppose I could say that lots of this is a bit familiar, but Your Day Will Come still felt pretty fresh for me.
Opener "Dedicated to the World" suggests a reliance on dream pop tropes, and while true, certain numbers here push at the restrictions of that form. "Police Scanner" and "Unifying Thought" add in early trip hop-style beats and jazz-inflected percussion, respectively, to win high praise. Elsewhere, the title cut favors washes of sound for its woozy effect. That sort of thing reaches a high point on "Coffee Culture", an instrumental that is cut from the same cloth as the best His Name is Alive numbers.
Shane Lavers keeps things concise and consistently listenable here, and it's sort of impressive in a modest way. Others are doing similar things but there's enough here to keep fans of down-tempo lo-fi noise pop quite happy indeed.
Your Day Will Come by Chanel Beads will be out this week from Jagjaguwar.
