Rhyme Or Reason: A Quick Review Of The New Album From Why Bonnie

It's been two years since the debut Why Bonnie album. The outfit, centered around vocalist Blair Howerton, is back in 2024 with more spins on the styles that made that first record so memorable. Wish on the Bone also offers a broader take on those forms too.

"Rhyme or Reason", a robust twang-y number, is a real highlight here. This one works in instrumental nuance with forceful and direct vocals from Howerton. Imagine Lucinda Williams singing for a post-punk band and you'll get an idea of the pleasures here. "All the Money" leans into a bigger sound, like Wilco's stuff, while "Dotted Line" marries that modern, country-flavored alt-rock to emotive vocals and sleek production. It's another gem on this release.

Wish on the Bone finds Why Bonnie trying to do quite a bit. There's more variety in mood than on their first, fine release. And the record's strengths are all down to Blair Howerton. Her performance on "Fake Out", to use one example, is really special. There's power in her vocals, such that her vocal chops are in the ballpark of those of Maria McKee or even Jenny Lewis. The material swirls around her, allowing space for both drama and subtlety in the vocals. It's one of many excellent tracks here, and one more reason to recommend this highly.

Wish on the Bone by Why Bonnie is out on Friday.
