TRACK OF THE WEEK: "Zen" By Lara Jones

This week's Track of the Week is barely a track at all. And that was the intention.

This edit of a longer work by London-based DJ, producer, musician, and and lyricist Lara Jones folds in on itself beautifully. Designed specifically for contemplation and relaxation, the music is meant to be also something beyond music. There's an artistry at work here that seems similar to what I found on the recent Lia Kohl album, and it's sublime. On purpose.

Commissioned by the Jerwood Arts Jazz Encounters Fellowship programme, Lara's goal was to write music for an immersive experience inside the 5-m geodesic dome. As sounds played and visuals created by Lara were presented, a listener could relax in the environment, and essentially find peace through the imagery and sounds.

As Lara explains:

"After presenting the dome twice I found that the relaxation aspect of the dome was what people loved the most and particularly by those who are neurodivergent and kids. Some of the people closest to me are neurodivergent and my son also one night suggested that I write an album that would help him get to sleep. All this inspired me to develop the dome into a space that was designed specifically for those with neurodivergence and also to enhance and augment the relaxation element of the dome."

Dome by Lara Jones will be out on October 4 via Lo Recordings. Details via Bandcamp below.
