La Luz brought their surf rock-meets-space rock sound to D.C. tonight. And an appreciative sold-out crowd at The Atlantis seemed just as thrilled as I was to hear songs from News of the Universe live.
Shana Cleveland didn't disappoint, adding guitar fills and scorching solos to tunes like "Dandelions" and "Always in Love" from the new record. Others benefited from keyboards and harmonies from producer of the album, Maryam Qudos. The sound was robust, and less dreamy than what it is on the actual release itself. In a live setting, the strength of the compositions was obvious, and the entire band seemed like they dropped down from outer space to gift us this music. Props to smart, jazz-y fills from Audrey Johnson on the kit, and sinewy bass from Lee Johnson. A cover of "Time of the Season" by The Zombies was another nice surprise -- see video below.
