TRACK OF THE WEEK: "Curious Tides" By Mary Timony

This week's Track of the Week is a one-off single from Mary Timony. Fresh from her latest superb record, Untame the Tiger, Mary's back with a piece from her archive dressed up and made new. It's a haunting bit of business for the start of autumn proper.

Made up of parts of two songs, "Curious Tides" insinuates itself then turns into a rocker. It wouldn't have been out of place on Untame the Tiger, really. I hope there's more like this from Mary soon; maybe a rarities collection? That would be a great idea, wouldn't it? Until then, here's what Mary has to say about this track:

"The first half of the song is a demo I sort of very lazily made in my basement about 15 years ago when I was between bands. I kind of forgot about it because it seemed unfinished. At the time, I had wanted to record a full band playing the second part but didn't get around to it. Last year while recording Untame the Tiger, I remembered the song and we decided to try it. David Christian played drums and Dennis Kane played bass, and we knocked it out pretty fast at 38 North Studio in Virginia."

"Curious Tides" by Mary Timony is out now via Merge Records.
