The warm textures of this record may be just what lots of us need this week. Brighton's Our Girl are offering up their new record, and The Good Kind reveals just how much can be said by saying so little. The Bella Union release is one of this month's best records, frankly.
Soph Nathan (The Big Moon) uses opener "I"ll Be Fine" to sail on a gently surging melodic line, while the title cut's languid charms sound like honey. This is indie without any complications, though the arch "Something About Me Being a Woman" lobs dark thoughts forward on the back of a cozy hook. At their best, Our Girl mine territory similar to that owned by now by Big Thief, but Our Girl are less interested in complexity than they are in direct simplicity.
There's not a lot of variety in style in the selections on The Good Kind, and what little there is requires patient listening. That said, there's an assuredness here that makes the music of Our Girl in 2024 seem the anthesis of indie that's more obvious and bright. If you hear this record in the right mood, it seems unbelievably powerful. And for some listeners, this is likely going to be one of the year's better releases. It was for me.
The Good Kind by Our Girl is out this week via Bella Union.
