Our first post of this new year is all about the new music being made by Jay Simonson as JJ Sweetheart. Simonson, formerly of Rough Trade band Howlers, as well as France Camp, is back as JJ Sweetheart. The tunes of JJ Sweetheart should earn comparisons to those of Beck, maybe Stephen Malkmus, and other indie stalwarts.
"Heart Medal", this week's Video of the Week is a languid-yet-melodic bit of business. It's got a twang to it, but it's not exactly Americana or something. It's ruminative, emotive, and with just the right kind of offhanded catchiness. It reminds me a bit of American band Twin Peaks, as well as Brits The Foetals. It's excellent and I can't wait to hear much more from JJ Sweetheart.
"Heart Medal" by JJ Sweetheart is out now. Details below.
