This is one of the best things I've heard in weeks. I shouldn't be surprised given that Lauren Matsui is in site faves Seablite and Slumberland Records band Neutrals. This, however, sounds very little like either of those two awesome groups. Rhymies is a new project from Lauren and here she channels peak Depeche Mode, adds a dash of The Associates, and then throws in a hint of Dot Allison for good measure. The result is sleek, supple, and perfectly pop.
"I Dream Watching" is the first teaser from the new EP from Rhymies. That EP will be out in April on Dandy Boy Records, but for now, groove with this one. An insistent keyboard figure propels itself forward as Lauren's voice charms above that. The mix, by Rick Altieri (Blue Ocean, Above Me) is seemingly simple, but the track seems layered and complex. More than anything, "I Dream Watching" is catchy, and the kind of thing that seems forward-looking despite being full of obvious points inspired by past pioneers.
The full I Dream Watching EP by Rhymies will be out on Dandy Boy Records on April 11. Details below.
