Transparent Figures: A Brief Review Of The New EP From Japan's Seventeen Years Old And Berlin Wall

On earlier releases, Tokyo quartet favored a sound that was part Swirlies, part Lush, part Slowdive. The shoegaze of the group was robust and impressive. On their Distance EP, the musicians are taking a more thoughtful and languid approach.

Mixed by Robin Schmidt (Wild Nothing, Pale Waves), the four songs here strike out for more New Wave-y climes. "Midnight Nonfiction" is pure pop, while the catchy "Landmark" recalls early Saint Etienne in a faint way. Elsewhere, the ethereal "Smoke Candle" is shoegaze of a sort, with keyboards in place of guitars, while "Transparent Figures" closes things out on a note not unlike mid-period Oasis.

This EP is being given its first ever physical release via Gerpfast, an Indonesia-based label. You can pre-order it via that link.
